Solution 1: Download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor

Have a look on QuickBooks File Doctor for more information.

Solution 2: Rename .ND and .TLG files

.ND and .TLG are layout files that allow QuickBooks Desktop to get into the company file(s) in a network or perhaps in multi-user mode. Damaged or Corrupted .ND or .TLG files can create errors when you open your QuickBooks desktop. If you Rename these files then it will not affect the data loss because these files are automatically recreated when you open the company file or diagnose the company files using QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

  1. Open the folder which has your company file

          Default Location: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files

  1. Get the Files with the similar file name as the company file but with extension .ND and .TLG.

          Example: company_file.qbw.nd, company_file.qbw.tlg

  1. Right click on the .nd/.tlg file and Rename it by adding the word “.old” after the file extension and hit Enter.

           Example: company_file.qbw.nd.OLD, company_file.qbw.tlg.OLD

Solution 3: Use UNC path instead of the mapped drive

  1. Open the options in QuickBooks by hitting right click along with pressing CTRL key on the QuickBooks icon and choose Run as administrator. Hold the CTRL key unless you have No Company Open window.

Note: Holding down the CTRL key avoid QuickBooks Desktop from Auto-opening a company file.

  1. Through the File menu, Choose Open or Restore Company > Open a company file > Next.
  2. When you look at the left pane, Click Network and go to the location of your QB company file.
  3. Choose the company file and Hit ‘Open’

Solution 4: Configure firewall and security software

You need to configure firewall and internet security settings  because you may face errors if your firewall blocks Internet access which is needed for specific QuickBooks programs or files. Make sure that you have updated your firewall to the latest release which helps you to solve this issue automatically else you have to go ahead and manually configure your firewall software. So it is recommended by us to update your Firewall.

Solution 5: Recreate the damaged folder

  1. Make a new folder on your C: drive.
  2. Navigate to the folder where the company file is saved
  3. Find the .qbw file.

Example: company_file.qbw

  1. Hit right click on the .qbw file and choose Copy
  2. Open the new folder and Paste the file
  3. Put Windows access permissions to share company files.
  4. Now, Open your QuickBooks Desktop and open the file through fresh Location.

To restore a backup for earlier QuickBooks Desktop Version (2010 and prior):

If you want to restore the backup file into your QuickBooks 2010 or prior then you can utilize the Restore Backup for earlier QuickBooks Version utility instead of doing the steps which we have mentioned above but you should have a copy of the Backup file with you.

Why should I use this tool?

The components that compress and decompresses files have altered significantly involving the later and earlier (just before 2010) versions of QuickBooks. This will make the backup files incompatible with unlike versions. This tool will make use of the company file backed up using QuickBooks 2010 and later versions to create a restored company file that one can open in QuickBooks versions ahead of 2010. Remember that the tool only works on the backup made during the earlier conversion.

To use the tool:

  1. Go directly to the File menu, then choose Utilities > Restore Backup for Earlier QuickBooks Version.
  2. Find the (…) button beside the Backup filename field.
  3. Select the backup company file, then choose open
  4. Find the (…) button beside the Restored filename field.
  5. Through the Save in the drop-down, choose the folder in which you wish to save the restored company file.
  6. Into the File name area, enter a distinctive name for the restored file in order to avoid overwriting a current company file, then choose Save.
  7. Hit “OK

Restore a backup company file even if the admin password is unknown

If you entered the wrong admin password then you will receive a message which states that “Your data has NOT been restored”. This is not a big deal you can use the Automated Password Reset Tool.

For Assisted Payroll (the US only)
